Chapter Nine

Zoe had taken so long that he’d finished the pizza, cleaned up, and then walked up the stairs to find her.

Glancing around at the area where Declan and Zoe slept, Chase smiled as his heart broke for them. Declan was in over his head with the renovation, but he’d done a good job so far. With some help, they could transform the space into a truly livable and sellable area.

He walked to the closest double hung window in a series of four and opened it. You shouldn’t be breathing this stuff into your lungs. “Zoe mentioned a contract to buy the bar business? Does that include the building? This area? Do you own the building? The land? Did you get a fair price? Have you signed anything?”

A slight swoosh of Declan’s red hair as his head swung Chase’s way came with a scrunching of his brows and the lifting of his cheeks into a confused expression. “Yes, we’re selling all of it, but we haven’t signed anything yet. The offer was low, but with some work, we could get enough to start up a new business somewhere else. I know you’re helping Maverick with the guest house gone wrong and you’re a farmer, but do you know about selling houses?”

Chase nodded. “My first business was a building supply company. My pappy was a carpenter and taught my dad who taught me.”

“Here’s the deal,” Declan said. “Zoe and I would love to visit your town. We’d drive across the country with you tomorrow, hell, we’d leave tonight if…” He shrugged and sighed. “If this didn’t take precedent. I can’t sign that contract without getting more for the place, and that means Zoe and I are stuck here running the bar and fixing enough of it to garner a better price. I don’t have any renovation skills. I’m researching how to do this stuff. I’ve got to grout in two days, and I think I did some of the stuff in the wrong order, but I don’t know.”

“First, help me open up these windows a bit.” He walked into a pink bedroom with a gray faux fur comforter over a mattress on the floor and a wooden door over cement blocks made into a desk. He opened the casement window that overlooked the dumpster. Whoever put in these windows must’ve used leftovers from random jobs. They’re going to have to be replaced, but I can put a chute through this window to the dumpster and get this renovation on track. “Y’all are staying with me tonight. There’s plenty of room. There are six bedrooms in the bed and breakfast, and I won’t take ‘no’ for an answer.” He turned around and stood facing the beautiful, blushing Zoe.

“I searched your name yesterday,” Zoe said. “I know you’re more than capable of taking this on, but it’s important that you know I didn’t tell Declan about everything or what we talked about a few minutes ago. He hasn’t checked you out online, but
